Two bespoke crane structures inspired by the infrastructure at the Fremantle Port are used for climbing, sliding and swinging. Graphics in the ground plane reference Chris Nixon’s original artwork, with nature play elements popping out of the softfall for balancing and climbing.
A pump track encircles the playground reminiscent of the railway lines that connect Fremantle to the world.
The Walyalup Koort Playspace is a celebration of Fremantle designed for it’s youngest visitors to enjoy.
After extensive community consultation, a brief to create a playground which incorporated the imaginative ideas of local primary school students became the basis for the project. The design started with a single illustration by local children’s book artist Chris Nixon. The artwork showcases the busy, colourful and iconic built forms of the Fremantle area.
Seedesign Studio’s team worked to translate the artwork and ideas into tactile wonderland. The result is a playspace that is highly identifiable, highly functional and completely unique.
The playspace is shaded by heritage listed mature ficus trees. It sits comfortably in the new Walyalup Koort development in the heart of Fremantle.
